Aug 01, 2019· Chemical refining is a technique in which the metal is dissolved in nitric or sulfuric acid to make a silver salt which can be then precipitated as a chloride and washed to remove impurities adhering to the chloride particles. The silver metal is recovered from the chloride by a chemical reduction process. Chemical refining consumes a lot of acid.
May 18, 2011· Some scrap is dissolved in nitric acid, making silver nitrate mixed with nitrates of the various impurities, mostly from the residue of silver solder. Adding copper will mean refining it again. The extra step would be worthwhile at the present price of silver, numerically more dollars/ oz than gold used to be, although there is an inflation
Mar 18, 2011· To extract silver from a silver-plated item, mix a solution of ¾ sulfuric acid and ¼ nitric acid inside a metal pot, heating it up to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Attach a copper wire to the object you wish to extract silver from and dip it into the solution for a few seconds. Rinse off the object and rub in sawdust to dry the object.
Feb 18, 2012· To recover the silver component, we need to completely dissolve the 2 coins in a 50/50 mixture of nitric acid and water. The amount of nitric acid required will be approximately 17mls mixed with approximately 17 mls of water. Using the plastic pipette, the water is added first followed by the nitric acid. Metallic silver can be dissolved from gold alloys of less than 30 percent gold by boiling with 30-percent-strength nitric acid in a process referred to as parting. Boiling with concentrated sulfuric acid to separate silver and gold is called affination. Both these processes are used on a commercial scale for separating silver and gold.
Apr 12, 2017· Refining silver without resorting to the use of a large smelting oven requires the use of nitric acid, so safety is still as important, if not more so, than it would be when using an oven. Weigh the silver you are going to be refining. You will need 150 ML of concentrated nitric acid for every ounce of metal. Put on your safety gear.
Oct 20, 2015· Place the silver in a beaker or Pyrex container. Add 3 parts distilled water to 1 part nitric acid. Place on stove or hot plate and simmer until all of the metals are gone. Take un-iodized table salt and drop into water and nitric acid solution.
Mar 24, 2020· Questions on refining silver contacts w/ Nitric acid. Post by weedoublewide » February 16th, 2020, 8:05 pm When there is plenty of free nitric acid both silver copper and other metals are dissolved into solution, the solution becomes saturated with the different metal ions or becomes a soup of ionic salts. I didn't roll with the AP
Silver nitrate is soluble in water and do not form a precipitate. If you want to form a precipitate of silver after adding nitric acid, you can add dilute HCl or NaCl solution. It will give silver chloride, white precipitate. AgNO 3 + HCl → AgCl + HNO 3
